we're out

Right about when this post is set to, um, post, we will be heading out of town for the weekend. We're going to North Carolina to stay at this house:

We're going for the weekend so we can pick this up:

The vehicle, not the people, obviously. Hopefully there's a lot less snow this time. This is one of Billy's houses (the guy we house sit for) and he's giving us this rhino as a thank you. So we figure we should go pick it up so we at least have something to show for all the time we've spent away from home. We won't have internet up there though, so no posts until Tuesday, probably. Have a lovely Labor Day!

clear the bridge, dive, dive

Katie and I went today to finish her dive certification. We went to the same place that Alfred and I have gone diving before, in a state park. There's this big crack in the ground that goes down over 100 feet, but there's a sign at about 50 feet that says "prevent your own death, don't go any further unless cave certified." Then you can drift along the little river to get back to the parking lot. Unfortunately today there were manatee in the river part so it was closed off. Katie had to carry all her gear both ways. It probably sucked. I've done it before and it sucked then, so I say that with confidence.

It was too damn cold to go swimming along with her, so I stayed out of the water and tried to entertain myself. I found some turkeys.

Then I was walking along the boardwalk, enjoying the scenery, when I heard her dive instructor's voice. I used my detective skills and found them in the water.

Then I played paparazzi and took lots of stalker-ish pictures. They had no idea I was there. At one point they were swimming across and suddenly both came up and I had to duck behind the railing so they wouldn't see me. I'm smooth as silk, baby.

The arrow's pointing to Katie's tank. The white tank next to her is her instructor.

She passed! Now when she comes back for Christmas, she can come diving with us and Mike, and Tony if he comes too. We had a celebratory steak dinner with celebratory cupcakes. It was very celebration-ey. She goes back home tomorrow, and we go back to our old ways. Sigh.

guess who's back, back again

Katie's back, tell a friend.

But first, I was a little miss Susie Homemaker last night. I chopped up stuff for our dinner tonight, which we put in the crockpot this morning to cook all day. (Lamb shank and breast, if you're interested. It was good.) There wasn't much to do, just chop onions and rosemary, but it made it nice and easy this morning. Rosemary the herb is kind of strange looking. Who the hell decided to eat something that looked like pine needles? Rosemary the friend, however, is rather fetching.

We had a rosemary plant once. Robyn gave it to us. We put it out on our dock so it had full sun, and it hurled itself into the water to avoid a slow, painful death at our inept hands. Can't say I blame it.

Back to Katie. She's down here for a couple of days to finish up her exams (we were in NY for most of her exam week) and do her dives to get certified. She's probably going to do her best to corrupt us while she's here. My parents have become pretty corrupted since she moved back this summer. I got multiple text messages the other night regarding a certain funneling incident.

I don't seem to recall this occurring at any point of my teenage years. Clearly Katie has some sort of voodoo magic hold over them. It's pure insanity.

more ghosty goodness

Today's my parents' anniversary. Happy Anniversary, Mom and Dad! 29 years, yo. Impressive.

I just watched another episode of Ghost Hunters while I exercised, it freaked me out a little. It was in a house, which is always a little creepy anyway, and Alfred's not home yet. So I'm watching The Soup to un-freak myself. Luckily I have never thought or felt like our house is haunted in the slightest. Billy's house makes me feel creepy sometimes, but not ours. So that's good. I was reading a book about ghosts in St. Augustine once when we were living in the apartment there, and had to stop when I got to the chapter about mean ghosts. It scared the crap out of me, although really I never thought that house was haunted either. What's with all these ghost posts lately?

So we had a good weekend, it was nice and relaxing. I actually picked up the branches that were knocked down by Fay already, generally we leave the branches around for at least a month before we get around to it. Our neighbors' branches were already picked up, of course, but there were some clumps of Spanish moss still on the ground. And the one-legged man that lives next to him went out in his kayak on Saturday. That man is tough. He's in his 80s and has one leg. That's why we call him one-legged man. I saw him in Publix once, it was the coolest. I felt like I was seeing a celebrity.

One more big development of the weekend: Alfred installed my Sims game for me on the laptop. Yes, I'm a huge dork, but you know what, I don't care. I'm proud of my dorkdom. Plus you all know I'm a dork, so it's ok. It's good timing, since football season is starting. Alfred watches his game, I play mine. It works quite nicely. So I was (and still am, really) a happy camper. God, I'm a dork.

this week rules

I left work early again today, as you may be able to guess. It's not raining at home anymore, I actually see a little sun, but it was really gross earlier. I just talked to Alfred, he's on his way home from work too, he said it's really bad where he is. There was also apparently a tornado spotted right where he was driving through, about 10 miles from the museum. Glad I left! Really we both messed up, we should have gone to work all day yesterday and taken all of today off. Oh well, what are you gonna do.

I've been fairly productive in the hour and a half I've been home. I cleaned the bathrooms, swept, took out the trash, made some cookie dough (I've heard rumors that a certain sister of mine is coming down here next week, and I've been craving some dough anyway), and washed some dishes. I was nice and left the vacuuming for Alfred, and haven't quite gotten around to laundry yet. Hell, I've got 2 1/2 days to do it now! I love having my weekend chores done by Friday afternoon.

I'm watching Ghost Hunters right now. I kind of love this show. I saw it for the first time when they visited the St. Augustine lighthouse, which was a really good episode (I might still have it on our dvr), and then I sort of got hooked. It's sort of cheesy sometimes, but it's fun. How's that for a pointless story?

It's more fun to blog during the day than at night. By the time I get around to blogging most nights it's after dinner and all I want to do is sit around and be lazy, so I kind of hurry through it. When I do it during the day I take longer and you get gems like this.

I think I'm going to go bake a couple of cookies. Or at least eat some more dough. Peace out!

soggy update

We're in Fay's eye right now. It's kind of cool, there's no rain and almost no wind. I guess it started moving again, I'm kind of excited for the next update to see where exactly it hit land again. They've been saying between Daytona and Jacksonville; we might be famous!

So I did go into work today, but I left at 1. It was really gross on my drive there, very windy and rainy, kind of scary on the bridges. Here's another action packed video for you. I made sure to turn off my cd player first so you can't make fun of my music.

There's lots of flooding in St. Augustine already, and we're supposed to keep getting rain until Saturday. They closed the bridge and a bunch of roads downtown. There was one place where a small lake/retention pond completely overflowed over a road. I didn't have my camera ready though, so no picture. I stopped and got gas on my way home and almost got blown away. I kept thinking "it's a twista, it's a twista!" cause I'm cool like that. The water in the intracoastal's pretty high, too. Luckily our house is nice and high up, we shouldn't have any flooding or anything.

The museum was fine, just lots of branches down. I was nice and let Marc stay in the office for awhile this morning, even though he crapped all over the damn floor and kept pulling out his feathers and leaving them around. I'm going to have to vacuum tomorrow. Here he is, cowering under a desk like a little pansy.

Meanwhile, Mama took it like a champ. She's a real woman.

I feel kind of bad for them, being stuck outside in this weather, but at least they got some food today. Plus there's a couple of structures outside they can get into, so they'll be fine.

So now I'm home. Alfred stayed home too, so we got to have lunch together. Now I have to work on some laundry, maybe clean the bathrooms, make some granola. Maybe we'll get drunk and watch the Olympics. It's gonna be an exciting time!

I think she's here

We've been getting rain most of the afternoon/evening, and it's been pretty windy. The museum closed early today, more because we had absolutely no customers than from the weather. We're going to be closed tomorrow too, but that doesn't necessarily mean I have the day off. If it's not bad out I'm supposed to go in. Is it wrong that I'm hoping for lots of wind and rain?

Sorry for the lameness of posts lately, I've got nothing.

hurricane's a-comin!

First, we did get the truck out of the fountain. The limestone got scratched, but the truck was fine. It could have been much worse.

So we've been under a tropical storm warning since this afternoon. The governor declared a state of emergency on Saturday, and the northeast FL red cross is preparing supplies and getting shelters ready. I feel like this is all being blown (ha!) out of proportion a bit. I mean, I can see the Keys being worried, since they're islands and all, and I guess the west coast could be concerned, but really. It's only supposed to be a category 1 when it hits, which isn't all that bad. And as my buddy Jim Cantore has taught me over my years of watching the Weather Channel, it will weaken as it goes over land, so by the time it gets to us it won't even be a hurricane anymore. Like one of my coworkers said today, it'll be like our typical afternoon thunderstorm, only all day long.

Of course, for my first hurricane I totally bought into the hype. I think my first was hurricane Charley though, which hit as (I think) a category 5. Worthy of my attention. I stocked up on bottled water and canned food. We still have about 2/3 of the food I bought, 4 years later. Oops. We did lose power for two of the other storms that summer, and between that summer and the following summer I got lots of hurricane practice. Here's an action-packed video of hurricane Frances.

Not as exciting as when the weather channel shows it. And for some reason when I try to put the slideshow in this post it messes everything up. I need to find a new photo hosting site to use for slideshows. Anyway, below this is a bunch of hurricane pictures. I love this stuff!

party animals

On Thursday night, after we went to the gym, we decided to go to the movies again. That's right, twice in one week! We smuggled in some food from Chick Fil A and saw Pineapple Express. It was really funny, pretty bloody. I liked it a lot, but Alfred liked Tropic Thunder better. I just thought this one was funnier, and all the action at the end was good. Bill Hader was in this one too, surprisingly, just for a few minutes at the very beginning. I think his part was funnier in this than in Tropic Thunder.

Then last night we went out to dinner with Ilya and Mercedes. Alfred found out that this restaurant we go to lunch at fairly often (well, he still goes, I don't anymore obviously) had 2 for 1 beer last night, so off we went. Mercedes and I only had 2 beers each, but Alfred and Ilya made up for it with 5 each. We had wings and nachos too, definitely a very healthy night. We wanted to get a picture with the food and all of our empty glasses, but the waitress said she couldn't leave the glasses cause they needed to wash them and use them again. She said she was sorry, but didn't sound it. She did take this picture for us, though. Apparently I felt the need to try and hide behind the umbrella pole.

This morning we're heading to pick up a fireplace that we've had set up as a display at a landscape/nursery place for almost a year. I think I've gotten one call on it, so obviously it was very successful. We've hit a slight snag in our plans:

Yeah, that's a truck in the fountain out front. We're working on it.

blogging over breakfast

I figured I'd come on and write a quick post while I ate this morning. See, there's my breakfast, yogurt and a banana muffin. I didn't get a chance to blog last night because we went out on a date! Yeah, that's right. We went out to dinner and then to a movie. Yay for $5 movie tickets! We saw Tropic Thunder. It was pretty good, definitely had some funny parts. Tom Cruise and Bill Hader dancing, for one. I had read that there were fake trailers before the movie, so when the first trailer started I assumed it was fake. It was something with Samuel L. Jackson (I think) being a bad cop. Looked pretty silly to me, so I Assumed it was a joke, but then the next one looked a little more realistic, like a movie I'd actually want to see. By the third trailer (for a Disney animated movie) I finally figured out these were real. But that first one really threw me off. (The fake ones are very obvious.)

I don't know if I've ever mentioned it here, but for a rich house, the hot water here sucks. They have an instant water heater, which is supposed to heat the water as it's being used instead of heating it and storing it in a tank, so you're supposed to have hot water right away and have it last the whole time. They must have theirs on some setting that turns it off after a certain amount of water or time, because I run out of hot water about half the time. And it's not like I take super long showers, I'm talking my normal 10-minute-max showers. I think it might have something to do with the fact that their shower heads use like 500 gallons a minute. It's nice for the first 5 minutes, but then when it gets cold it sucks.

Wow, this is fascinating stuff. But my breakfast is eaten and I have to leave for work in 13 minutes. Peace out

Alfred loves peaches

Last night I went to my book club meeting. I could have blogged about it last night, but then I'd have nothing to write about for today! It was kind of nice, there were only 5 of us there for a change, it was nice to be able to actually be able to hold a conversation and hear everyone. Usually there's so many people that you don't even end up talking to half of the people there because the table is so long. And I like all the girls who came, so that was good, too. 2 of them were pregnant. One is about 7 months along, she's due in October and doesn't know what she's having yet. Also, she's freaking gorgeous. The other girl was due yesterday. Her stomach sticks out so freaking far, I don't understand how she stays upright. She's having a little boy.

The book we read wasn't my favorite ever, but we didn't really talk about it much because only me and one other girl had read it. I don't know why I even bother, except that it gives me ideas for new things to read. And I like to read.

On a different note, teachers went back to work today for most of the counties around here. It's a good thing I didn't try to hold out for a teaching job, because obviously, that would not have worked. I heard through the grapevine that there was an unofficial hiring freeze and that they would hire like crazy the first 2 weeks of August, but if that's the case, I certainly never heard about it. I applied for tons of jobs online, mailed out resumes to several principals... nothing. It's kind of discouraging that I didn't even get a single call for an interview. I never got a call about any of the other types of jobs I applied for this summer either. I got 2 emails, one acknowledging my resume and one saying they had filled the position (2 different jobs), but that's it. I guess I'll just hang out at the museum for the rest of my life, since I apparently can't get hired anywhere else. Thanks a lot, Cornell!

our weekend, of course

Good times were had. Saturday we worked like mad outside, we cleaned up the yard, I weeded the brick walkway, and Alfred mowed the front and back yards, so it looks all nice again. I also cleared out part of the garage so my car can fit in there too. Stuff sort of leaked out from around the walls since we sold my Civic. Oh, and I repotted my plant to give it some more space, it's much happier now.

Saturday was also my day to finish watching So You Think You Can Dance. What an awesome finale. I'm kind of sad it's over for another year, I'm totally going through withdrawal.

I made some banana muffins Saturday with the bunch of bananas we forgot to bring with us for our house sitting gig. Alfred had the genius idea to make muffins instead of a loaf so we were able to try different additions. We tried blueberries (which was Alfred's favorite), dried cranberries (my favorite), and chocolate chips. And plain, of course. Pretty good, for banana muffins. I made some of my soon-to-be signature cookies too. They were tasty, if I do say so myself.

We started getting into the Olympics last night at oh, about 10pm. Good timing. We watched 2 world records get broken (in swimming) so that was exciting. Alfred finally turned off the tv and forced us to go to bed. Good thing, cause otherwise I might still be watching. It's strangely addicting. We're watching it again now!

I also just ate literally one bite of a peach, and I can already feel my throat getting tight. Usually it takes a lot more than that to bother me, maybe peaches are more potent than apples. Very weird.

various culinary experiences

First, I would like to thank Alfred for his assistance with this post. I'm writing this on Thursday night, but don't have the cord to get the picture from my phone to include it, so he's going to put the picture in and post it on Friday morning. Because we can't just have picture-less posts willy nilly every week. It's just not right.

So we went out to dinner Wednesday night with Ilya and Mercedes. We went to this new place with a Spanish chef and a big tapas menu, it was right up Mercedes' alley. It's the same place we went for my last lunch before I went back to the museum, but this time we did it right, we just ordered a bunch of tapas and all shared. We had squid, chorizo, shrimp, chicken, a Spanish tortilla (kind of an omelet with potatoes in it) and of course sangria. It was really good, even though some of the bigger pieces of squid looked like centipedes. Then afterwards we went out for ice cream at the super delicious ice cream place by Alfred's office. Somehow Alfred managed to resist the frosty goodness, that's my sundae he's holding in the picture.

Tonight we went out again, but just to a bar and grill type place. It's really good too though, I had a meatloaf sandwich with the best pasta salad ever, and Alfred had a sandwich about 5 inches thick. And we had empanadas with some ingenious dip (ranch dressing mixed with salsa, delicious!) as an appetizer. We had a gift certificate from restaurants.com so it was cheap, too.

After dinner tonight we stopped at the grocery store to get some blueberries for breakfast. There was a lady in there who was going through the blackberries and literally touching every single one in each package to find the best ones. She was just standing there and opening each package, poking and touching and squeezing each and every berry. I stood there for a minute just staring at her in shock and she totally didn't notice, she was way too engrossed in manhandling the fruit. It was kind of disgusting. Take home lesson: always wash your produce!

introducing

The museum animals: Mama Kitty and Marc Anthony the Second.

Marc is doing what he does best in this picture: coming after Mama. For some reason she is terrified of him, even though a) she's bigger than him, and b) she's a damn cat, and cats eat birds. He'll chase after her while she's just hanging around, he comes into the office while she's eating and scares her away, he's basically kind of a bully.

Marc is maybe 2 or 3 years old, we got him from our vet. Our old chickens both died (Marc Anthony the First and his girlfriend, Cleopatra) and our vet's son had a few chickens of this breed, so he gave us one. I got to go pick him up. He crowed a lot on the drive. It was loud. I think he has a complex since he's so small, and has a crooked toe. He gets his food served to him in a bowl every morning. My first morning back I forgot that and just threw it on the ground. The second morning, he walked right over to his bowl when I went to get his food, like bitch, get it right. I've been putting my plant outside to get some sun; he pecked at it a little to show it who's boss.

Mama, on the other hand, is very sweet. We named her Mama because she kept having kittens at the museum. Mose was one of them, he was our pet at the museum for a few years until he ran away and broke my heart. We were pals. When he was little he'd go to sleep on my chair, then when I came in he'd either stay there and share my chair with me, or crawl into my lap and sleep there. If he was near me outside and I squatted down, he'd come over and climb into my lap just to snuggle with me. I loved that damn cat. I was so sad when he went missing.

Anyway, Mama was very skittish around people and used to run like hell if we so much as looked at her, but we started feeding her and eventually she became somewhat comfortable with us. We caught her a couple of summers ago and got her fixed, so her name's kind of funny now. Every morning she comes to the office for her breakfast, body slamming herself against the door until we open it for her, and then we have to prop the door open for her or she freaks out. But she lets us pet her, and she'll hang around me outside if there's no one else around.

We used to have a couple of sheep too, but they live with our vet now. I told a teacher that once and she was like "oh, they died?" I thought that was funny.

new vs old

So I mentioned that they're building a new museum. It's way bigger, and will have 8 programs instead of our current 3. We're supposed to move sometime before our fall groups get started, which is in the middle of October. Hopefully it's done, or at least done enough. We're not going far; right now we're on the southwest corner of the intersection, and the new place is on the northeast corner. I took this picture this morning from my office.

On the left is the main entrance. There's going to be a gift shop and visitor information center inside. There's going to be a fort build behind the fence on the right so you'll see the fort walls and gun tower as you drive down the street. It should be cool. I would have gone over and taken a better picture, but there were workers there already when I got to work this morning and I didn't want to look like a goon.

The current museum is looking a little run down. They've started taking some of the supplies over to the new place already and have sort of stopped doing some repairs. But since it's summer and it's been raining a lot, there's lots of nice plants all over the place.

We even have corn growing at the corn grinding table.

And the grape vine they planted a few years ago has grapes on it!

Today was our last group of the summer, probably the last program ever to be conducted at the old museum (knock on wood). It felt sort of momentous.

weekend

We had a pretty good weekend. We didn't get home until Saturday afternoon because we spent Friday night at Billy's, then stopped to show Robyn my car and pick up some goat milk. We didn't do a whole lot the rest of the day, just watched some tv and relaxed. We got pretty creative with dinner; we didn't want to have to go to the store, so Alfred had the idea to make breakfast.

It was damn tasty! We also made some split pea soup in the slow cooker and let it cook overnight, so we've got that meal ready for this week. Sunday we really got to work, made some yogurt and granola, went for our walk (we saw a dead sting ray up on the beach, which was kind of cool), then made some Indian food for dinner.

We came up with a new diet plan along the way, too: add an extra teaspoon of red pepper to whatever it is you're eating. Works like a charm. To be fair, I just followed the recipe, I didn't add extra and mess it up.

We get to house sit all this week, yay! It's not so bad, it means we get to go out to dinner because we're sort of afraid to use their kitchen. It's just so pristine.

Also, I got my first full tank of gas in my new car. I got 30.7 miles per gallon. Not bad. Not quite as good as my Accent or Civic, but not bad.

look what I got!

We drove up to Georgia last night and bought me a car!

Isn't she pretty? It's a 2005 Hyundai Elantra, I got my four doors and automatic transmission, and even got a sunroof and mp3 player! It's a champagne color, which makes me want to name it Andre. It drives really nicely, it's a smaller car but feels nice and big from the inside, it's got a nice size backseat (for carseats, maybe....) and overall I'm just really happy with it. So, yay!
